Bad Omens Most Anticipated Release, “Specter”, is Finally Out
Bad Omens are back with new music! The band finally released their brand new single and music video, “Specter” via Sumerian Records. This marks the band’s first piece of new music after the successful release of their 2022 album The Death of Peace and Mind.
The hauntingly beautiful track is signaling a new phase in the band's music. When you first hear the song, you are entranced by the cinematic piano and Noah Sebastian’s amazing vocals. Very ethereal in his vocals, it adds an emotion of intimacy that is almost fragile-like that gradually builds into the song. Sebastian’s range is highlighted throughout the song from those perfectly placed airy falsettos but still keeping a warmth in those low ranges. Going into the shift change of the music after that first chorus, you get more of those electronic synths, some clean guitar picking, subtle bass sounds and the steady drums but all are not overwhelming the consistent pianos that are used throughout the song. By the time you reach the bridge portion, the music goes back to that atmospheric sound it had in the beginning with the only slight fry scream from Sebastian to give that slight change in the music that gives remnants to synths and electronic sound they used in their album CONCRETE JUNGLE [THE OST], which was for the comic series the band created.
With lyrics, “Do you feel love?// I know I don’t// With no one to hold// Do you feel love, love, love?// When you’re alone// Do you feel at home?// Do you feel love?”, there’s so many thoughts you can have. The way they structured the lyrics to have a blunt feel, with open-ended rhetorical questions. So simple but carries so many emotions that you feel stripped down to a ghostly figure of yourself. The lyrics are true to the Bad Omens’ sound.
The accompanying music video that was directed by Noah Sebastian and Nico, is a true cinematic masterpiece. The visuals of different people going through different struggles, but the constant image of the Specter and the young boy they used in their teaser videos, just watching the chaos happen. There were little Easter eggs in the video giving homage to their music video for “Dethrone”. Overall the music video was like watching a short film play out before your eyes and the song itself fit perfectly with it.
“Specter” shows the growth and true artistic ability that is Bad Omens. This may not have been a heavy song, but this is a true Bad Omens single that will be a hit for everyone. It is a haunting, raw, emotional song and nothing less to be expected from the band. I look forward to what the new album they have cooking up right now. Definitely give a song and the music video a listen to if you haven’t yet! Catch Bad Omens at Louder Than Life on September 20th and Aftershock on October 4th.
